The violin is a bowed string instrument and is the highest pitched member of the violin family. It sits along side its cousins the other members of the violin family - the viola, cello, and double bass. The violin has 4 strings tuned a 5th apart, to the notes g, d', a', e'' : On early violins the strings were of pure tummy. For players who are not officially scholars anywhere there are a wide selection of sources from which to get sheet music. Violin players of any skill level should be ready to find the sheet music they want online, and in a few cases, even for free. Sheet music can be free to share online if 2 qualifications are met. The cello has 4 strings tuned in fifths : C ( the lowest ), G, D and A ( below middle * ; these are tuned precisely one octave below the viola. The violone is an outmoded instrument, a big viol, like a modern double bass. It is a part of the standard orchestra and features in the string quartet and many other chamber groups.
It is less found in popular music, but the instrument is commonly featured in pop and rock recordings. An exception are Apocalyptica, a bunch of cellists well known for their versions of heavy metal songs. Digital sheet music is available for a wide selection of genres, so if you are playing on your own, you will not have any limitations on the kind of music you're employed on.
